Seattle's Plan For Attacking the Switch
Offensive takeaways from the Seattle Storm - WNBA Playoffs X's & O's
A combination of elite shot making and a consistent defensive scheme helped the Las Vegas Aces advance to the WNBA Finals, eliminating Seattle and putting an end to Sue Bird’s illustrious career. Overall, Seattle played really solid basketball and at times they looked really damn good but Vegas’ ability to execute down the stretch gave them the edge.
I wanted to highlight some of the bright spots for Seattle throughout the series when it came to attacking mismatches as a result of Vegas’ switching defense.
5 Ways Seattle Exploited The Switch Through Post Play
Iso Breanna Stewart
Let the talents takeover vs. smaller defenders
Post Up - Weak side Kickouts
Skip Passes to weakside shooters when defense loads up on ball
Post Up - Corner Cut
Punish the double team by cutting the offensive player whose defender left to double
Seal the small and look Hi-Lo
Top shoulder screen to stay beneath the switching defender
Horns Flare Set Play
Set the flare for the shooter and slip the screen to the bucket
Wanted to keep this one short and sweet while hopefully still providing some value and ideas for ways to attack a switching defense through the post. Give some of these options a go this season if you have dominant or versatile post players who draw a ton of attention on a nightly basis.
